Groundwork of Our Famous Organic Garden

The ground work has begun! Farmer David began tilling our U-Pick Organic Garden last night, tilled more today, and will spend a few more days at it.

Farmer David Tilling the Garden

Farmer David Tilling the Garden

This year we’ll have a larger variety of produce, adding corn, peas, more varieties of beans and tomatoes, … actually I can’t even recall it all but we’ll list them as he gets them planted.

The picture shows him tilling the original garden plot, which he also enlarged this year. Next he’ll add 3 more plots, each for crops which simply took over the garden last year. And if all goes well, he’s also adding a small herb section (it will be his first).

All of this is free to those who camp with us. We ask that you take what you need for your meal, leaving the rest for other guests. Donations to Farmer David aren’t required but are greatly appreciated to offset his costs and his season-long efforts.

Of course we can’t guarantee you a salad upon arriving because crop harvest depends on when you’re here, the weather, and how many pickers arrived before you.

By the way, Farmer David:

  • is a real person,
  • really doesn’t work here,
  • doesn’t own the park,
  • really is named David, and
  • really is a Kansas farmer.

Like last year, he is challenging for me to photograph. He’s camera shy!

He tends to visit his garden in the evenings so maybe after you check in to your camp site you’ll get a real live glimpse of him. He LOVES to visit with our guests, so be sure to stop by if you see him working the land.
