I recently received the enormous honor of becoming the 17th recipient of the Stan Martin Memorial Award, the highest award bestowed by the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC). The award was presented to me in a ceremony at the annual convention in Orlando on Nov. 12th.

ARVC's 2009 Stan Martin Memorial Award Recipient Mary Arlington

Mary Arlington with Stan Martin Memorial Award

Not only do I own and operate High Plains Camping, an overnight RV park in NW Kansas, but I’m dedicated to the RV park and tourism industries:  from the consumers to the other park operators, the travel and tourism sector both within Kansas and across the country (and even beyond), legislators in Topeka and in Washington D.C., and those who are in the dealership and manufacturing sectors of the camping industry.

The Stan Martin Memorial Award recognizes leaders whose tireless commitment to the outdoor hospitality industry is evident in every aspect of their involvement, leadership, creativity and dedication. It was developed in memory of Stan Martin, an industry icon whose leadership and vision guided the industry.

The award reads:

In recognition of her sense of partnership, a strong
belief in industry unity and a commitment to volunteerism,
Mary has exhibited a lifetime of involvement and has
put her personal goals aside for industry and community
gain. She has devoted countless hours to her park, the
state association in Kansas and to ARVC, Mary is one
that is always willing to step up and be counted, to lead
when action is needed, and to give when others walk away.

Mary is selfless and humble, yet has had a
significant impact on all those she has touched.

The Stan Martin Memorial Award is in
memory of an esteemed colleague
and industry leader who passed away
much too soon in 1992.

It is a rare time when I’m speechless, but that’s what I was when my name was announced.

As is typical of volunteers, I show up at meetings, I participate and I do the work that I do because my heart believes it to be the right thing to do.

To receive recognition caused me to reflect on how much I had done for the industry, but in the end I know the industry has done far more for me than I could ever do for it. My business wouldn’t be where it is today if it weren’t for the hard work of many, the skills, knowledge, and connections provided through assocations, and the blessings from God Himself.

Other Recent Awards Presented to Mary Arlington:

  • 2008 Chairman’s Award by the National Association of RV Parks & Campgrounds: “Mary’s insight, thoughtfulness, and drive have made a lasting impression on ARVC, her colleagues and her associates.”

  • 2007 We Kan! Award by the Kansas Sampler Foundation: “Mary Arlington ~ Great Booster for RV Parks and Campgrounds”

To be of service is all part of the Win / Win I have always believed we should strive to find.
